Spider-Man: Far From Home Confirmed For IMAX As Sony Signs Long-Term Deal

July 2024 · 2 minute read

Venom and the upcoming Spider-Man: Far From Home may not exist in the same cinematic universe, but they’re still connected in plenty of other ways, and because of the huge box office success of Eddie Brock’s first standalone film, IMAX screens and theaters will prove an important part of the release strategy for Peter Parker’s next solo outing.

The connection here is Sony, who’ve struck a new deal after Venom’s strong performance on IMAX screens. This will be the first long-term, multi-picture arrangement that the studio has made with the theater company, and it will reportedly have an impact on the way that not just Far From Home is released, but also next year’s Men in Black and Jumanji sequels.

Of course, IMAX has already been a regular collaborator with Marvel Studios ever since the release of 2010’s Iron Man 2. The recent Avengers: Infinity War was even the first major studio feature to be shot entirely with IMAX digital cameras, because when a film goes that big with its plot, it’s only naturally to want the visuals to be much the same.

In any case, filming wrapped earlier this month for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, but the production has left us with plenty of pics and clips to pore over. During the project’s tour of Europe, we got a look at Jake Gyllenhaal as Peter’s next villain Mysterio, as well as some images of Spidey’s new stealth suit. Back in New York, on the other hand, we mostly got a whole load of material showing the web-slinger spending time with Michelle “MJ” Jones, suggesting that the almost inevitable romance between this pair could play a big part in the story.

Either way, we’ll be able to see Tom Holland in action on the biggest screens possible when Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out on July 5th, 2019.
